The story behind the ink
Khmer art, made personal
Black and Gray Realism — Full Sleeve
This full sleeve was built in black and gray realism, with the composition carried across both arms so the piece reads as one continuous work from shoulder to wrist. Nothing is coloured — every tone comes from shading, soft gradients and fine line work.
Portraiture is the centrepiece. Apsara and guardian figures are rendered with soft edges and realistic skin texture, while Khmer ornament — crowns, naga and lotus scrollwork — is layered underneath as structure rather than decoration.
A piece at this scale takes patience: the arm is a curved surface, so light and shadow have to be reworked as the design wraps from the deltoid down to the forearm. The result keeps its depth and contrast intact from every angle.
